100,000 Dollar Question for Chrysler Workers

chrys.jpg

Back a while ago, Chrysler offered to buyout several workers in anticipation for a slower 2007 and also because of some larger scale financial issues overall. And now, to start the new year, they are looking to do the same thing again--to the tune of 100K.

This effort is targeting 12,000 workers to basically say that they will take 100,000 and be done forever with the company...that's it. However, this situation now is a bit different--there are several workers who are close and can claim an early retirement, which would therefore give them several benefits that aren't covered by the 100K buyout. Along with the fact that the company's financial status and Cerberus situation, the feeling is that there won't be as many people as what there were almost eight months ago jumping at this 100,000 dollar question.

So then, what will the company do? And really, really, what does this mean for the long-term future of the company? One would think that moves like this come at drastic times--is it merely a "the sky is falling" mentality with the American Economy, a pre-emptive strike upon future crystal-ball forecasts of failing numbers?

It's a big risk if that is it, but one I am sure that they have calculated over and over. Very interesting, nonetheless.
