In an effort to recoup some of the losses from 2007 and also in lieu of its deal with UAW, Chrysler has tried to take advantage of a clause that has stated that they can hire new employees for much less and also health care expenditures-wise than the current employees. They have been doing this by offering some of the bigger fish total buyouts ranging from 70,000 to 100,000 simply to walk away from their jobs.
One would think that for some people this would be a no-brainer. But for Chrysler's calculations, the auto workers may have more of a brain than they anticipated. They also have a lot of fear, as it is widely expected that Chrysler will not hit their goal due to the fact that many of these workers, despite getting a huge buyout, are extremely hesitant due to the likely recession upon the United States.
And so goes the vicious circle that seems to continue in the auto world; we may be seeing one of the darkest hours coming for American auto makers, and it won't be until there is a public surge towards regaining the buyer confidence and gas prices can stabilize for the companies to get a look at a positive future. It may even go back to the philosophy of "you have to spend money to make money" and I mean by really, really putting money into the alternative energy possibilities and make these widely available soon; sure, the loss may be quite large short-term, but in the long run, don't you think this is the only thing that they will be able to really hang their hat on?
