2009 Escalades to get E85

cadillac_plat_escalade_main.jpg

The Cadillac Escalade is one of the biggest hunks of metal on the road. Ok, so perhaps saying it is a hunk of metal isn't appropriate--yes, it's flashy, yes it's almost gaudy, and yes it eats gas like Jared used to eat before he found Subway. But now it has been announced that these Escalades will be released in 2009 with E85 flex-fuel capabilities, which is at least a start.

I say that it's at least a start, because let's be honest--it's not as if this is really all that groundbreaking--I mean, it's kind of like putting a toupee on a bald man. It may hide the deficiencies, but the problem is there, and the marketing of this doesn't make it any less of a nuisance to the movement towards fuel economy.

GM has already confirmed that half of its U.S. lineup will be flex-fuel capable by 2012 providing the infrastructure is in place, and the carmaker built more than a million flex-fuel vehicles in 2007-2008 already. Not only is the fuel cheaper than regular gas, it’s also a cleaner-burning fuel. The Escalade running E85 produces up to 23% less greenhouse gas emissions than it would on just gas. Like I said, it's a start.
