2015 Outlook for Mercedes-Benz: 1 out of every 5 sold will be hybrids

glk_bluetec_hybrid_main.jpg

And the technology train and the shift in development continues to chug along in the automotive world. For the typical automakers of the commercial variety, i.e. Toyota, Ford, General Motors, Honda, etc., planning to build lots and lots of hybrids in the future is almost a no-brainer at this point. For luxury car makers like Mercedes-Benz, the talk about hybrids hasn't exactly been loud and proud, but that doesn't mean that it is basically not going to happen--because according to a report from the German car producer, 20% of its car sales by 2015 will be from hybrid models.

The plan is simple in theory: Mercedes-Benz will make a new hybrid model each year from 2009 onward, and the goal of 1 out of every five is also due to "the current state of legal requirements and customer demand, while positioning the brand to continue beyond the eventual end of the combustion engine." (eGMCartech)

While the superior engineering of this brand already is something its known for, that usually translates into more dollars out of consumers' pockets. With the already known supply-demand effect of hybrids and higher costs for current models, will this mean a ridiculous cost for the Benz models? My guess is that it won't be out and out ludicrous, but it won't be wince-free, in my opinion.
