American Axle deal to end strike?

ap_uaw_strike_080226_ms.jpg

11 weeks ago, the workers at American Axle going on strike was supposed to be more of a passing nuisance on a large scale. It was "assumed" that it would only last a very short time, but here we are, and there is still the status quo--nobody has budged either way. But--that could be changing very soon according to the possibilities that the company may be offering workers.

In this, the automotive parts company will offer buyouts of $140,000 for workers who have been there 10 years or more, according to a proposed agreement handed out at a United Auto Workers meeting in Detroit today. American Axle will pay a maximum of $105,000 over three years to workers to ease them into lower salaries. Senior workers will be offered early retirement.

While there has been some positive feelings about the agreement, the feeling that workers gave was not good at all--in fact, many have said that they will just say yes to it because of the UAW deal being "the best they could get" along with the fact that the economy being the way it is doesn't help matters at all. The overall feeling is that while the owners continue to make millions, it doesn't make sense to ask people to take pay cuts as well as buyouts as a short term deal which really solves nothing in the long run, being simply a band-aid. I think they make 100% sense feeling this way.
