Americans drive almost 10 billion less miles in May

portfolioroad.jpg

In what is normally one of the higher months of travel for Americans, May had a drop of almost 3.7% in driving in the United States, which represents a total of 9.6 less billion miles driven for the month. The drop was the third highest decline in almost 66 years. Yes, it's been that bad.

Obviously, with the pain that Americans are feeling at the pump along with a very sluggish economy, the travel needs that were normally reserved for Memorial Day weekend were thrown out the window and more people stayed at home. This actually created a big slide in road taxes as these are highly counted on through road tolls, and with an obvious drop of this magnitude, the losses faced could be staggering. The thing is--where else are they going to find the money needed for construction repairs and development? Never fear, Americans, I'm sure they'll find a way to tax that while the gas companies continue to use our money as kleenex since they have so much of it.

The decline in driving has been happening in subtle changes since last November, and in that 9 month time frame, Americans have driven 40.5 billion miles less than the year before. Yes, it's that bad.
