Apple and Mercedes-Benz To Partner On GPS Navigation System?

apple_mercedes.jpgApple's upcoming iPhone is set to debut on June 29th in the United States, and with that launch Apple catapults themselves into a massive and potentially lucrative new bastion of revenues and opportunity. But now that Apple has gone mobile, what lies beyond the iPhone for this fast-moving technology company?

If rampant rumors are any indication, then Apple is preparing to make a grand entrance into the automotive software business. Speculation emanating from German publications Focus and Spiegel recently suggest Apple is hard at work developing a GPS Navigation system that it will license to automakers far and wide. Mercedes-Benz is rumored to have struck an exclusive 6-month debut deal that will put Apple's GPS navi system in Benz cars before any other automaker can license and implement the technology. I'm a little suprised by this given Apple has worked with Volvo in a design capacity, but if Benz beat them to it, good on them.

Will Apple's GPS system look anything like the iPhone? Is this all smoke and no fire? Time will tell, but one would think Apple's investment in multi-touch interfaces would juxtapose nicely in an auto-focused satellite GPS navi system. Will this be called the iSat? For now, all we have are a lot of questions, no facts and a truck load of speculation. We'll definitely update this if we get some form of 'confirm or deny' from the good folks at One Infinite Loop.
