Are Gas Saving Gadgets worth it?

It’s a no brainer to think that with the huge surge in oil and therefore gas prices that companies who produce gas saving gadgets are starting to show increases in sales. The big question is—do they really work? And if so, is it worth the money involved?

There are so many theories out there and wives tales for things that can work to save gas, such as putting pure acetone in your engine (which by the way, really doesn’t do much of anything and can actually damage your injector system and engine with repeated use). But these gadgets, like the Vortec Cyclone, don’t make exactly wild claims such as doubling miles per gallon, but even the advertised improvement—in the Cyclone’s case 6 MPG—aren’t really true either.

The short of what I have read is that something like this actually does improve the fuel efficiency 1-2 MPG, which for the price of about 40.00 a pop actually will pay itself off in a decent timeframe. The issue is that with other things that are suddenly being marketed is that NONE of these products are endorsed by the EPA—even going so far to say that the gas savings were so small that it didn’t justify the cost. So for those of you that are on the lookout for these types of fixer gadgets, make sure to do your homework, including seeking opinions and even looking up some things with the EPA and FTC to make sure you aren’t getting scammed and quite possibly damaging your car as well.
