Are in-car breathalyzers inevitable?

barbados-breathalyzer.jpg

I was reading an article about breathalyzers potentially being mandatory in new model cars, and it occurred to me that while I was reading it I was starting to get fired up about infringements of my rights, I then began to think--well, wait a second---if breathalyzers are mandatory, why in the world does it make a difference if you aren't drunk?

GM and Chrysler obviously are behind this safety ideology and while the idea of being able to put it in a non-intrusive manner that doesn't infringe upon us feeling less "normal" seems like it would be a very high cost and developmental nightmare, it does seem like something of an inevitability, regardless of how much we kick and scream. I do support the idea of going against our rights--but I would guarantee that proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that they could ultimately stop drunk driving--that's HUGE, and those that have lost loved ones to these accidents would be screaming their redemption.

But then again--this begs another question--when does it stop? I mean, are they going to start putting electronic devices on our odometers that "knows" what the speed limit is in the area and then doesn't let you go over it--because of how dangerous speeding is in terms of accidents? Is there going to be some device that measures how tired we are when we are driving and not let us if our brain oxygen doesn't register high enough? What about in weather conditions--are cars going to start being smart enough to basically override a driver and not let them drive or control the driving during severe weather situations?

Bottom line--while I understand the theory, the idea of this is somewhat near-sighted and not something that we should be doing in terms of opening a proverbial pandora's box of control. We may eventually just find ourselves walking everywhere (Hey, obesity epidemic solved!!).
