BMW Compact SUV plans going strong

I know, I know, it's really an oxymoron to call something a "compact SUV". But in the case of what many auto makers are planning on, including BMW, the design and look is really exactly that--an SUV feel but compact look. And the idea behind the marketing is while the world seems to be shying away from the full-sizers, it doesn't mean they don't like them--it's simply a question of economics; thus, the compact SUV market is set to explode.

On the BMW side, the new X1 is due next year, and this in essence makes the X3 closer to the X5 in length. While the X1 is more than likely going to be sold in Europe and concentrated in Germany, the United States will be having the X5 and X6 still produced in Tennessee and continued to be marketed there--but that doesn't mean that BMW won't bring over the X1, and maybe sooner than expected with the way things are going.

The V-Series are sedan-based crossovers, similarly sized and also based on the mechanicals of the X3, but so far only 3-series and 5-series based versions are planned, meaning the range will likely be targeted more upscale than the X1/X3 SUVs. Regardless, this is once again a sign o' the times, and it could be a boon for BMW and others that really are positioning themselves in the crossover/compact SUV market.
