Can China make a dent into mainstream market?

At the 2008 Detroit auto show, one of the biggest questions was if the great country of China would be able to infiltrate the U.Ss and mainstream market. There were a total of five Chinese automakers on hand, which is something to note--but--when asked about it, it was shrugged off that the Chinese firms can't even keep up with the Chinese population's needs, much less the main markets.

So, why the fuss?

Those in the industry seem to hear more about those companies and their aspirations to enter the U.S. market than the ones attending the Detroit Auto Show this year, save for Geely, who first made an appearance in 2006. The irony is that while the number of Chinese automakers attending is a record this year, a few more promising ones are actually missing from it.

This paranoia of exports from such a large country as well as this invasion of the sheer number of companies has the big guns a little concerned--with the United States facing a possible recession should gas prices rise and spending going down--it could be a ripe time for entry for the Chinese makers and therefore make a paradigm shift in the global scales of the auto world.
