Can Chrysler challenge the Volt?

chrysler_ecovoyager_news_image.jpg

Chrysler made sure that the hype for the Chevrolet Volt at least had a little bit of a stumble, although the steam that the Volt has been carrying seems to be on a runaway train. Still, even in the time that General Motors was celebrating their 100th anniversary and the Volt finally coming out as a production look and the centerpiece of the celebration, Chrysler started its big talks of their own versions of electric hybrids, and it didn't go unnoticed.

Now, following this discussion, Chrysler will hold a national dealer telecast at 100 theaters across the country on Sept. 23rd showing it off. Chrysler’s vice chairman and president Jim Press was out earlier this month showing three ‘electric-vehicle prototypes’ to select Chrysler dealers. Press said that the ‘producible prototypes’ will allow for a 300 mile range and will do 0 to 60 mph in less than four seconds.

The question is--can these cars compete with the hype that the Volt has created? The timing is great and competition should breed competition which, when the dust settles, should be a good thing for consumers overall, but to think that unless they can start a huge campaign like GM has with the Volt, at least for a little while I don't see Chrysler swaying many unless the price tag is vastly different.
