Can GM get away from being just a "big truck" company?

General Motors is almost 100 years old. And during this near-century, the company has built itself up as THE big truck company, riding Silverados, Tahoes, Hummers, and other big SUVs and trucks to the top of the world. However, in the paradigm shift of economies and oil prices, it has meant a total reversal in mentality and at the same time meant huge losses for GM.

The next challenge? Not only producing quality vehicles that can compete with the Honda Civics and Toyota Camrys of the world, but changing the ideology that everyone holds of GM--this "big" car company--will be an even bigger challenge. With Nissan, Toyota, and Honda controlling the hybrid world seemingly as well as the sedan world, the big three and GM have had a hard time breaking in with some of the current models.

One of the biggest boons for GM could be the switch from the Cobalt, which while it has done well overall, to the Cruze, with its sleeker European look and its gas mileage that can get up to 45 MPG. This should be able to allow GM to not only charge a bit more for its product, but give it the profit that it had raked in with the bigger vehicles. The problem--it won't be available until 2010.

But will it ultimately change its total philosophy? Probably not. It will still sell SUVs and trucks--but it won't have as much pressure to do so by expanding its smaller line and hopefully--for their sake--to make some money.
