Can Helio take the crown without winning?

hcastroneves.jpg

Helio Castroneves is a media dream: conscientious about himself, his driving, his public--he's reserved but professional, and very steady overall. He can be emotional, but normally in a positive way. And this type of personality shows on the race track as well--however, there can be some drawbacks to this type of mentality, and some people are questioning Castroneves because he has gone now 25 races without a victory in the Indy Racing League, yet still sits in second place in the standings.

When questioned about this, Helio typically shrugs it off and states that it shows the competitiveness of the league, and that he has placed in the top five many times. The question that continues to be raised is--if you are that close that many times, why isn't there at least one victory in place? And the bigger question is--can Helio actually take the first position from Scott Dixon without winning a race.

I think, for Helio's sake, being aggressive every now and then will only help him, as there needs to be more of an image of a fighter for IRL's sake and not just someone who is looking at the points. If Castroneves takes the title without winning a race, it will be yet another farce that critics of IRL will hang upon the point system and the league itself. I certainly hope, for both of their sakes, he is standing in victory lane for at least one race this year....
