While the United States' choice of police cars seems to revolve between the Ford Crown Victoria, Chevrolet Impala, and Dodge Charger, there may be a new player in the game very soon. Carbon Motors, based out of Georgia, is working on a production model that is specifically designed for police use only. The price tag would be approximately 55,000 per car. Normally, governments can get the Vics, Impalas, and Chargers for around 25K. So why would they want the Carbon Motors "E7"?
Well, quite simple. Even though the cars are less than half of the E7, when you have to add all of the components that police cruisers require, the price tag overall is well over 80K. And there you have it. So, what DO you get with this slick looking cop car? The Carbon Motors police car has integrated police lights (incorporated into the roof, bumpers, fenders, and elsewhere) so the parachute-like traditional light bar that sacrifices both fuel consumption and top speed is unnecessary. The interior is also optimized for police work, with most - if not all - of the aforementioned $55,000+ in aftermarket equipment already built into the car. For example, rather than taking up most of the front seat not occupied by the driver with a dash-mounted full-size laptop computer, the computer is integrated cleanly into the center stack. Ballistic protection of certain areas of the car is available as a factory option.
This is great, that is for sure, except for speeders like me. Integrated lights? Sheesh, how am I supposed to slam on my brakes as I see them coming down the highway?? Yeah, yeah fuzzbusters and radar, right? I am sure these guys will have something built in for that too by 2012, when the car is slated to get out on the road. Maybe I'll learn to slow down by then....but I doubt it.
