"Clean Diesel" Jetta TDI delayed

Hmmm...methinks I smell a rat. Volkswagen announced that they have delayed the Jetta TDI's launch because of a "technical issue that was found during the later stages of durability testing." Hmmm....You sure?

Let's see. This was originally scheduled to launch Spring 2008, and now they are talking at leastsummer 2008. And industry experts are saying this could delay diesels in general. Why? The illusion is that the good ole' USA is not "sold" on diesels (notice the air quotes I am using). Dirty diesel is one thing, but let's not forget that diesel costs at the pump have literally skyrocketed, and the negative impression that this could leave based upon the fact that this will end up making retail products go higher will more than likely sour American's perception on diesels as well--but of course, they don't say that....

With stricter standards for clean air and what not, a breakthrough of a clean diesel could be great for VW, but with this delay, it can't help the sentiments either. Stay tuned...
