Crash Tests show improved results for small SUVs

jeepcrash.jpg

Five years ago, even smaller SUVs received marks in crash testing that were either marginal or poor. Some of the biggest knocks on the category were the lack of control that caused rollovers as well as lack of side air bags and the like. However, with improvements made on several models, the smaller SUV category got some ooomph back into its sails when crash testing scores improved considerably.

The 2009 Ford Escape, 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan, 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander and the 2008 Nissan Rogue all received the highest marks possible in testing done by the The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The marks for the Escape also apply to the Mercury Mariner and Mazda Tribute, and hybrid versions of the Escape and Mariner. The vehicles share the same underpinnings. Car safety has been a central concern over the past several years, and now that these types of things are happening, perhaps the rest of the SUV world will start following suit. One thing is for sure--they have to find something to get those sales a churnin'. Simply having the acronym SUV no longer has the same shine to it any longer, so this type of news is wonderful for enthusiasts.
