Death Proof Car? Not so much...

death-proof-car-2.jpg

On Howstuffworks, there is the idea of engineers coming close to making a death-proof car. The premise is that with human interaction, accidents are more prone to happen because of our slow reaction time and basic "freezing" up. Engineers are working on such things like precollision prevention systems, which utilize lasers and other variables to "read" a car's situation at all times and can alert the driver to certain potential dangerous situations, as well as even go so far as maybe even applying the brakes itself.

There are other gadgets in the works that will utilize GPS navigation and weather conditions that will alert drivers to yucky conditions and the like as well. The question is--will this bring us a death-proof car? The answer will always be a resounding NO. Why? Well, let's be honest here--in theory these items are very much worthwhile and are great concepts. But when you combine technology, which is never fail-safe, and human interactions, which are a lot of times "off" for many things, it doesn't end up to a zero on the death scale.

Don't get me wrong, I am sure these will assist in decreasing accidents and auto fatalities across the board. But even to say that engineers are getting "close" to a death-proof car is kind of an oxymoron in itself, don't you think?
