Dell to get into auto industry?

dell_main_01.jpg

What normally happens when an industry--any industry--goes through the "Chicken Little" stage of the "sky is falling"? In many cases, savvy investors and entrepreneurs that are willing to take calculated risks decide to enter into realms that they normally aren't involved in. For the automotive industry, there is very much a "Chicken Little" feeling going on right now across the globe, and one computer industry player is thinking of throwing their gigabytes--er, hat--into the ring: Dell.

Michael Dell, the CEO of Dell, has noted that he and a group of investors are in the process of potentially scooping up hundreds of dealerships across the country selling premium and import brands--and he won't be buying them at a premium. Former Sonic president Jeffrey Rachor is also involved in the 500 million dollar deal, so obviously this move has some big players involved with some great backing and business minds.

My gut is that with Microsoft making their way into the car world with their integrated SYNC software with Ford that Dell is considering their own company's entrance as well and what they can possibly do to kill two birds with one stone. News like this should give others hope that the crisis we are under will someday be weathered because people of this caliber just don't invest money with a hope and a prayer. The question is--when?
