Drop-Top SLR Could Be Last Flower Child For McLaren-Mercedes Supercar Marriage

benz_mcclaren.jpg

By all accounts the Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren Roadster is the very definition of a Supercar. Track-worthy engineering and a price tag fit for a god (an oil baron will do).

Supercar fans were elated to see the first topless version of this beauty arrive on the scene for 2007. What many weren't expecting was the subsequent speculation that this may likely be the end of the SLR collaboration between these two automakers.

Mercedes-Benz and racing firm McLaren are not likely to work together on a successor to the Mercedes SLR McLaren supercar, but instead will pursue their own separate projects, according to a report by Automotive News Europe. - leftlanenews
Mercedes-Benz will tap into an existing offshoot of the AMG brand for future suped-up SLRs, while McLaren is readying a supercar of their own.

None of this talk about separation should take anything away from this stunner. With a top-speed north of 200mph and boasting what is arguably the fastest automatic transmission in the world, people will be talking about the Mercedes-Benz-McLaren SLRs in supercar lore for years to come, long after production has ceased.
