Euro Commission considering new car ad rules

For all of the things that we have in our life, there always seems to be a disclaimer: tobacco ads and even on the pack of the cigarettes are required to have health warnings on them, and when you watch a TV ad for a new hyped up drug, half of the commercial is spent discussing the risks of the drug. When you listen to a car sales ad, I always challenge myself in the last 5-10 seconds to get as much information as the guy talking a thousand words a minute is saying because they are required to disclose it.

So with the emissions rules and regulations around the world, is it any surprise that the European Commission is considering having something similarly added to the car advertisements that auto makers bombard consumers with? This is seriously being considered, and the commission has said that the potential of up to 20% of car ads may be required to discuss things like EPA, emissions, global warming, things that basically promote the going green philosophy or even warning about things that you "get" with the car that may not be so healthy to our environment.

As heavily as the SEC polices the airwaves in the United States as well as how the drug industry is mandated, having something like this to me is more than needed. Consumers need to be aware of everything they are getting themselves into on a recognition scale, and just like smokers, even though they know that there are risks, they smoke anyways--but I am sure the point of this is that if people are not informed, they may purchase irresponsibly, so having these warnings may at least make a dent into the public consciousness and sway more toward the protecting of the environment versus the dollar signs that the car makers want to see. Bad for the auto companies, but good for the world, in my opinion. More power to ya, Euro Commission!
