Ford plug in hybrids still 5 years off

If you are a diehard Ford buyer (my condolences if you are), and you are clamoring for a plug in hybrid (which, if you are a diehard Ford buyer the probability is low), you are more than likely going to have to wait five years or more until they are on the overall market. In a recent interview, it was told that with the technology needs as well as the equipment, it is vital that continued research and determining cost-effective batteries and battery replacement options be in place prior to widespread sales.

This does, actually, make sense, because why rush a product onto the market and then have its battery go out in a few years, meaning that you'll probably have to pay a truckload for a replacement or the value of the car basically be zero. I can certainly understand that, but why five years? I have not heard that figure from other car makers who are putting all kinds of time and money into developing this type of technology, and I can't think that they aren't just going to throw a model out there and then have it flop.

Is is just Ford? Is this just underselling? Or is it indeed something that "quality is job 1" is truly being followed here? I guess these questions can only be answered as time goes on....
