Forget emissions: Inside your car is just as dangerous

bacteria5.jpg

Although this is not something that is really a huge surprise, a recent study showed that "cars play host to a large number of germs and bacteria, including 356 germs per square centimeter on the gear stick and up to 850 per square centimeter in the trunk (where many people put groceries). They concluded that you are as likely to get sick eating off a car dashboard as you are a toilet seat." (KickingTires)

Yuck.

Of course, this also means that the air that circulates in and out of there is very much an aggressor of this bacteria. Those that consistently take pets and small children along are the most obviously high in terms of bacteria amounts, again not surprisingly. I guess the next time I get suckered into a cabin air filter at the oil lube place I can just laugh and say, "Buddy, you have no idea!!"

Is there any solution to this? At this point, nothing was stated as things that could really keep it from happening, but it doesn't mean that all you germophobes out there can't have a bottle of anti-bacterial handy or spray down your car with Lysol every so often. Pretty soon there will probably be strains of things that just come from cars--just wait--it will happen.
