General Motors Not Super about Ads

v2-cnnmoney-chart1.mkw.gif

Alright, alright, well I couldn't really think of anything really clever for a headline. But, the message is clear--General Motors, in the face of having to cut costs literally as much as they can, won't be joining in the reindeer games of the Super Bowl this year and their 3 million a spot amount.

This is not really a surprise--GM also pulled out of advertising on the Emmy and Academy awards, the latter being a mainstay for the company. But especially with the gaudy amount that advertisers have to pay for the 30 second spots on what is deemed to be the biggest day of commercials and some companies are actually made or broken (literally) by the investment, GM is declining on risking anything more than they can at this point.

From CNN Money: GM Spokeswoman Kelly Cusinato said "We're in the midst of cost cutting... We're scrutinizing all of our programs and all of our media spending, so in the midst of that, we decided against it."

While the idea of spending money to make money is mostly true with marketing, I can understand this decision.
