GM Brands to stay—for now

gm gravestone.jpg

The rumor mill can be a nasty thing. With General Motors, it’s been murderous. From speculation of complete overhauls to job losses to claiming bankruptcy, if there’s been something bad that a company has to dispel, GM has had to face it. And now there’s another one—that GM is looking to sell off their brands and piece things off, with Saturn, Buick, Pontiac, and Saab all being names that have been thrown around.

But, according to GM’s Mark LaNeve, this is all bunk. The only thing that is going on, according to the car maker, is that each of its branches are being “examined”, which means that they are basically just looking at the businesses from all angles to improve business—and that does not mean that selling them is part of that process.

The only brand that is still a hot commodity (per se) is Hummer, which is under “strategic review” by GM, which basically means that it could be sold, join-ventured overseas, or even developing better, more efficient models for the brand. My guess is that it will be sold overseas, and that could happen very quickly with the drought that GM has undergone to scare up more cash for further “examination”.
