GM closing Wisconsin and Michigan to the tune of 2500+ jobs sooner than expected

gm_worker.03.jpg

And now the ugliness continues to go on and on and on and on....you get the picture. General Motors, citing the continuing lack of car sales despite the fact that gas has level off and continues to dip, announced that its Janesville, Wisconsin, factory, which makes the GMC Yukon and the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban large SUVs, would be closing by the end of the year to the tune of 1200 workers. The car maker had already announced that the Wisconsin plant would be closing, but previously the anticipated close date was 2010.

And that's not all.

GM also announced that 1300+ jobs would be lost from its Grand Rapids, Michigan, plant, which does metal stamping. This announcement wasn't exactly a huge surprise, as GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner said last month that the automaker would have to make adjustments, particularly in metal stamping factories. However, the surprise came that it would be this early in both cases.

The trickle down effect of business and the cost of low car sales is becoming a stark reality as more and more auto workers are losing and are in jeopardy of losing more. As industry experts continue to harp on the fact that the auto industry is still about 18 months from a turnaround, that's a mighty long time to worry if you're going to have your job, and the odds-if you are an auto worker--aren't good that you'll make it through unscathed. Not good.
