GM puts halt on Flint factory construction (which will produce Cruze and Volt engines)

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

Well, don't go all chicken little on me quite yet--while this news is a bit disturbing when General Motors announced that they were temporarily halting construction on its Flint, Michigan factory which will largely produce the engines responsible for powering the Chevrolet Volt and Cruze, it's not entirely as dire as it seems. Or is it? Muhahahhaa.

Sorry, just had to throw in something of good measure to keep you interested. This move is really only related to GM's current state of financial affairs in order for them to get their books straight, and there is every intention to get things going on the Flint plant as soon as things can be put back in order (does that mean as soon as bailout money is secured? Hmmm...methinks GM may be holding the Volt and Cruze ransom in some manner).

GM is looking for up to $18 billion in government loans in an attempt to survive the worst U.S. auto crisis in 26 years--and has even gone on record to say that it may not be able to pay its bills for the 1Q of 2009.

A turbocharged version of the 1.4L 4-cylinder engine will give the Chevrolet Cruze 100-hp allowing it to return a fuel-economy of close to 40 mpg. A non-turbocharged version of the engine will give the Volt additional power to generate enough electricity to keep running after it completes its 40 miles on battery power alone.
