GM putting more pressure on Volt as bailout money looms

22volt.600.jpg

It's been no secret that General Motors is not only throwing its eggs into one basket, it's seemingly stuffing as much as it can into it. In this case, it is expected that when the deadline hits for the federal bailout package "plan" that the government is insisting on in order to consider giving out money to America's auto makers, that GM will put even more emphasis than the already ensuing hype that surrounds the Chevrolet Volt.

While the figures have fluctuated from time to time, the idea that GM says that it is no longer really looking towards the future as building custom cars, but more electric cars altogether, the company will be building this premise largely around the sales of the pseudo super car. But lawmakers haven't been exactly sold on the ideology, even claiming that GM won't see a profit on the car due to the R&D, marketing, and production cost turnarounds taking more time than what normal production costs are due to the nature of the technology.

However, it is should not be forgotten that America's car manufacturers have often followed the philosophy of banking on certain cars during certain swoon times: the Chevrolet Corvette, the Ford Mustang and Ford Taurus, and Chrysler’s K-car lineup of compact, fuel-efficient cars in the early 1980s all gave their companies an enormous boost. But that was a different time and place--in all of these situations, it was really "tweaking" existing things and making them a bit better; in the case of green technology, GM and the rest of the US bunch haven't exactly been rocket scientists in terms of proven development.
