High gas is GOOD for the auto industry?

Here's a thought that actually is like the "I shoulda had a V8" (the tomato drink, not the engine, silly). An article I read recently on WSJ.com discussed the fact that high gas and oil prices is actually GOOD for the automotive industry. At first I was like, "ummm.....kkkkaaaaayyy..." with that high pitched question mark at the end. But, after reading, it actually makes a lot of sense in the long-term prospects of our culture and environment.

Why? Well, think about it...when normally is change the most radical? It's usually when chaos ensues--take for example, the gas crisis of the 70s--which then lead to oil prices going way down, the subculture of buying gas guzzlers and then the price of oil going up and--voila! Here we are with 4 dollar gas....Does that mean the same thing will happen again? No! We don't want it to? Just follow me here--the worse off the problem is and the supply-demand factor plays into things now and into the future, the more that we have to put critical efforts into finding the alternative fuel means and thus hurrying it into production.

The less reliance we will have on oil and instead turn to hybrid/electric types of cars by the auto makers developing deeper legions of their car base, the better--this will have even longer-term implications in the overall scheme of energy costs and then reverse the tables on the oil prices as the demand will slip considerably. Does this mean we will rid ourselves of oil altogether? Don't be silly--but at least we will have the option to do what we need and exploit more means of technology than ever--and that's not a bad thing.
