Honda Accords top most stolen list--again

1995_honda_civic.jpg

The Honda Civic had previously been the nation's most stolen car. And guess what? They retained the crown! Yey! Oh wait, this isn't really something to celebrate. But at least car thieves are remaining consistent. The National Insurance Crime Bureau says that it is because of the car's popularity and reliability, so while we would like to tip our hat to car thieves for their taste in cars, the fact really is that there are just a lot more of them to steal and available for such. Likewise, since many of the cars that are stolen end up in chop shops, it is evident that these older models are still on the road and therefore are more in need for the possibility of replacement parts, etc.

Actually, Honda has two cars in the top three--the 1995 Civic and 1991 Accords. In the top ten, there are 3 trucks, but it doesn't appear any SUVs. I guess thieves don't want to pay for gas either. Despite the stolen car types, the NCIB has stated that crime in terms of grand theft auto has gone down by almost 9 percent, which again is a great trend. Can this downturn also be attributed to the gas surge?

For more information on this issue, please see the article on CNNMoney.. My take on the issue: with safety also being a big deal with people nowadays, the "awareness" to protect one's car is even more so, prompting even more of the simplest of defense mechanisms, locking your door, as well as all of the gadgetry that is available now as well. I am wondering if in a few years hybrids will be at the top of the list--my bet is a resounding YES.
