Honda "Small" Hybrid said to get 60 MPG

Prius, there's a new game in town.

Or at least that is what the Honda folks are thinking to give the "master" of the hybrid race a run for their literal money. As Honda is producing four new gas-electric hybrids, among them a CR-Z hybrid coupe, Civic hybrid, and a Fit hybrid, there is also a "Small" hybrid that is rumored to possibly revive the old Insight name and get up to 60 MPG.

There's nothing overly flashy or revolutionary for the small hybrid, according to info on the web that states that power will come from a 1.3 liter engine mated with a nickel metal hydride battery. Honda is apparently planning on selling 500,000 hybrids by the end of 2012, and approximately 200,00 a year will be produced in the Suzuki plant with about 100,000 of those heading to the United States.

The nice thing about the influx of imports from the Big Three in terms of smaller cars as well as things like this with Honda is that with more supply and more choice, that should be a little lighter on the wallets for consumers and then really make the investment in a hybrid a no-brainer when the sticker price goes down a bit due to competition. But something tells me that won't be happening for a while--as demand right now is just way too much to catch up to the supply end.
