It would be smart to order 15K more

smartcar.jpg

The Smart Car, a mini's man mini, has 25,000 ordered to be delivered to US dealerships this year--and it may not be enough. The microcar's demand is way over the number that Daimler AG anticipated, and Penske Automotive has said that 15,000 more should be produced.

But can they? The demand already is far more than production can handle, and while there is a certain number of cancellations that will occur of those that ordered the Smart cars initially, but not enough to warrant stopping the production at 25K cars. Even Smart USA has said that the production for the first quarter has been good and relatively free of problems, with the first 3K to be delivered by the end of the quarter to 67 dealerships. The total number of dealerships will reach 74 by the end of the year and they will not have more.

Most of these dealerships are owned by Mercedes-Benz, and it will really be their call as to whether the production will increase in the United States. It's certainly one of the things that could revolutionize things on the highways, but will it just be a passing phase because of the micro-ness? Or will it make its way into the seemingly saturated American pop culture with a thundering (but small) boom?
