Maserati launching in India

087820.1.jpg

No, not yet--but they will! The luxury carmaker is looking for a distributor in India to market its sports speed and "poshness" to one of the more burgeoning areas of car sales in the world. This comes on the heels of the company finally having a "good" year in which sales almost eclipsed 8000 cars--this after having 18 straight years of being "in the red". No, the 80s aren't back, guys....

The US is the largest market for the Italian automaker, and they project to go up again this year, in spite of the downturn in the American economy and soaring gas prices. So, obviously, the thought is that they'll build off the momentum and go to India! The company said that Maserati's initial sales in India would be small, but expect the market for premium models to quickly in the wake of other off-shore demand for the high-end piece of machinery.

Here's my thing--isn't India supposedly one of the more dangerous places to drive in the world? Isn't the thing that they are putting smart cars on the roads out there despite the fact that the accident rate and the highway systems are like the stone age? And they want to put in a major luxury car that is built to GO FAST on those scenarios? Yikes. I am sure they will sell decently, but pray for the driving population of India!!
