Mazda Taiki Concept is a Breath of Fresh Air

With Frankfurt come and gone, all eyes are now on Tokyo. The 40th annual Tokyo Motor Show will get underway on October 26, and there should be no shortage of hot concepts and world debuts of new models on display.

One concept that will debut in Tokyo is the Mazda Taiki concept car. This concept is part of an evolving design series that Mazda calls 'Flow', and it's quite a departure from traditional body forms. The 'taiki' is actually a japanese word for 'atmosphere' and I think it fits this design beautifully. The impetus for this design was to create a concept that visually communicates the flow of air, and I think they nailed it.

The key features are the all-glass canopy, which we are seeing with greater frequency in concept prototyping. It's fair to say, the all-glass enclosure is something we are going to be seeing on the road in large numbers in the not too distant future. The car also boasts a new version of Mazda's rotary engine technology that promises to set a new bar for environmental efficiency and street performance. It's also interesting to note that this concept boasts a front engine placement, but is actually a rear-wheel drive car.

Overall, this is a really intriguing concept from Mazda - a company that continues to surprise me with forward-thinking designs and features.
