Mercedes-Benz: Hybrids and Partnerships In The Offing

aclass.jpgLots of DaimlerChrysler news of late. BMW is actively looking for a partner in the subcompact space to compliment/augment its front-wheel drive Mini production. Arch-rivals Mercedes and BMW are rumored to be talking about partnering on a Mercedes-branded subcompact project for the next generation A-Class. BMW and Mercedes are already partners on hybrid powertrains, so it is conceivable they could expand this co-operation.

daimlerchrysler.jpgOn the hybrid powertrain front, DaimlerChrysler recently unveiled two new hybrid options that will eventually filter into Chrysler and Mercedes-Benz models. Among the two offerings is a "mild" hybrid that utilizes 'stop-start' technology which enables your engine to completely and seemlessly shut-off while waiting in traffic. This technology alone could reduce gas consumption by 13%, according to Mercedes. With sales of Lexus hybrids sizzling and growing, it would be wise for Mercedes to get moving on an aggressive roll-out schedule.

Mercedes is rumored to be readying a hybrid debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show in mid-September. But just to put this in some perspective for you - while Mercedes is working on a hybrid debut, the Lexus RX 400h (hybrid SUV), and the Lexus GS 450h (hybrid sedan) are already accounting for approx. 20% of the total sales for the RX and GS models in Canada.
