Merger between GM and Chrysler could cost 35K jobs

Mergers are usually great things for company executives and stockholders. Not so much for employees, because they become collateral damage in the quest for giving the company more value. In the case of the General Motors and Chrysler potential merger, there could be a loss of up to 35000 jobs with the companies coming together.

For the United Auto Workers, the unemployment lines could be a mile long with this move. Michigan, home to Chrysler's Auburn Hills corporate headquarters, would be hit hardest if there was an acquisition. The state would lose 8,000 to 10,000 factory jobs, and the bulk of the 10,000 to 15,000 lost white-collar positions would be in Michigan, Anderson said.

While the discussion is still just a heavy rumor where even the indication of who will run the company has been spoken of (it will be GM) and the outstretched impact of Nissan-Renault and Cerberus. These power players may all be impacted in significant ways, but the dramatic impact to the American economy and to the jobs that will be severed with the car company combination could be out and out devastating--especially to Detroit. While there are things that are still being thrown about, you can be certain that this estimate is probably dead on, and that is truly unfortunate.
