Mini Cooper D: A 65 MPG Dream

Yes, it could be on its way, America. The Mini Cooper, who's regular car and Clubman already has a good fuel economy, now has in Europe a Mini Cooper D (for Diesel), that when broken down into United States miles per gallon, it equals out to 50 miles in the city and approximately 67 on the highway. This is done by a few different ways, including the engine and other high tech systems.

The engine was done in conjunction by BMW and Peugeot, turns at just 2000 RPM, at the peak of its torque curve. The horsepower peak comes around 4000 RPM. Auto Stop-Start takes a page from the hybrid book, saving fuel by shutting down the engine when the car is stopped and the transmission is in neutral.
Automatic Stability Control + Traction, Anti-Lock Brakes, Cornering Brake Control, and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution keep the tires glued to the ground. (source:mpgomatic.com)

Some Mini fans are literally frothing at the mouth over the possibility--and again, it's not available in the States, but with the constant push and issue with fuel and gas prices, it may be here before we know it. With the Jetta TDI as another diesel option with wonderful fuel economy, the next issue is to get the diesel price down to a (semi) reasonable price....
