Mitsubishi reaches agreement with United Auto Workers

Mitsubishi_Plant.jpg

Well, it's tentatively agreed upon.

And that is great news to end the drama that has accompanied the Mitsubishi-UAW negotiation on a new contract that has gone on basically for three years. The main plant, out of Normal, Illinois, had a partnership union agreement with Chrysler that started back in the 1990s, and while the contract that the UAW was under had been extended twice, including taking pay cuts (oohhhhhh the horror!), there hadn't been anything in terms of a median negotiation--until now.

While terms weren't exactly given (at all!), the fact that the pay cuts occurred were largely due to the fact that this plant in Illinois was chiefly responsible for production of Mitsubishi's big lines--Galants, Eclipses, and Endeavors--the sales that have waned in the US basically kept the Japanese auto maker from giving many concessions towards upping the ante for the UAW.

While the workers have not ratified the agreement, if it's a new contract, the feeling is that at the very least with the proposal being something that has not even been heard of in quite some time, my guess is that the UAW is getting a pretty decent deal out of it, and with today's economy and auto industry woes, they'll probably scoop it right up!
