New Versions of Saturn Vue Hybrid shown of at DAS

svue.jpg

Saturn dropped some big time knowledge at the Detroit Auto Show about the newest versions being planned for the Vue Hybrid. The 2nd and 3rd versions were highlighted, and the main difference between the two is the battery technology, where version 2 uses the more common battery (nickel-metal hydride) and version 3 is the more higher-tech lithium ion battery type. The 3rd version is not set to be out until late 2009. Those batteries will come with a plug that allows the owner to get a full charge in about 4-5 hours.

A plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle differs from a non-plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle by offering extended electric-only propulsion, additional battery capacity and the ability to be recharged from an external electrical outlet. GM will therefore likely be the first to offer this in a plug-in hybrid. Gotta love it.

Called the "Green" Line, the plug-in design maintains two driving modes-one for city, the other for highway- and four fixed mechanical gears to maximize efficiency while maintaining performance. In addition, special controls will be utilized to enable higher speeds during electric-only propulsion and maintain electric-only propulsion for longer periods of time.
