Next Generation Batteries soon to come?

Car battery.gif

So General Motors has been puffing up with their lithium ion battery development for both the plug-in hybrid Saturn Vue and the Chevrolet Volt. Meanwhile, Toyota has continued to state that using the li-ion is too hazardous for automobile use on a long-term basis. Pish-posh, says GM. If there's anything that they feel will bring them back into the game of world sales, it will be mass producing the lithium hybrid variety.

Perhaps Toyota has been laughing under their collective breath the whole time, because the rumor is that they are actually bypassing the li-ion batteries altogether and going towards the new technology of zinc-air batteries, even though the claims of them continuing to rework their nickel-hydride varieties for better hybrid performance is still evident.

By going into the zinc-air market, which there really isn't one when you think about it, according to Autoblog, "If the rumors are true, these new batteries would make up a big chunk of Toyota's plan on offering a hybrid version of every car it sells by 2020."

Wow....perhaps we are on the verge of witnessing the Microsoft-Apple type battle in the car world for years to come. Hopefully the consumers will be the ones who ultimately benefit.
