Nissan declares to Tata Nano: We're coming

tata-nano.jpg

The burgeoning Indian market has been going literally nutso over the Tata Nano, the inexpensive cracker jack box of a car that not only is extremely affordable (around 2500 USD), but also gets amazing fuel economy (big surprise, it weighs like 3 lbs). So when Nissan/Renault teamed with Bajaj Autos and confirmed that they would be offering a very similar car for the same affordability, etc., it was no surprise at all, confirming yet again that imitation is the best form of flattery. (or best way to make money, that is).

The car will be named the "ULC". Does that stand for Ultra-Light Car? Usually Looks Cool? UnLuxurious Car? Ok, I'm out...Anyways....Tata Nano doesn't have to shake in its little boots quite yet--the car won't be offered until 2011, but you can bet that this will turn into a battle of epic...well, small..proportions, as the trend to grab as much market share is still very much up for grabs. The initial plan is to market 400K units to be produced in India by that time, with expectancy to grow globally--which is probably a shoo-in at this point.
