Sweet Home Alabama: VW looking to Huntsville

The competition has been stiff. All of the locations involved have been trying to give one more reason than the other for Volkswagen to set up shop there, but it appears that the final vote is going to go for Huntsville, Alabama, for its new production plant.

There are a couple of reasons that have been cited as to why the push has been made to end up in sweet home Alabama; one, apparently the Alabama state government has put together an incentive package (details not available yet) that Tennessee and Michigan were not able to match, as well as the fact that rumor has been that Alabama has been able to meet the construction deadline they desired, whereas Tennessee may not have been able to do so. The plant is looking to produce up to 300,000 cars per year, with the first year of production being in 2010 and the plant running at full speed by 2018.

While this is bad news for Tennessee and Michigan, we’re obviously being able to see a little bit of a more even playing field with the auto making areas of the world, as this could be a major win for the southern states to go hand in hand with Toyota’s production plant that is opening in San Antonio, Texas. One thing is for sure—Michigan has certainly lost its stranglehold on the production mecca of the United States.
