The End of Mercury?

alt01.jpg

We may be witnessing the end of an era very soon with a longtime favorite in the United States. Mercury, who hasn’t had a very large segment or models for quite some time, may be in the midst of being phased out altogether by 2012. with the future plans (or lack thereof) of the current cars it produces.

Mercury, which was started way back in 1939, currently has plans for the Sable, Grand Marquis, and the Mariner through the 2011-2012, but there has been no discussion of anything after that. The Milan will more than likely be the “last car standing” after its refresh in 2009, but in discussion’s with Ford’s President of the Americas, Mark Fields, he danced around the Mercury question, which lead many to allude to the signal of the end of the company.

I actually am a bit saddened by this, because while none of the cars even listed above is revolutionary or truly unique in nature, Mercury has made solid and dependable cars for quite some time, and perhaps this again is more of a sign of the consolidation of segmenting and more pressure to produce fuel efficient, compact and subcompact cars altogether without having to reinvent the wheel. For what it is worth, I wish they’d at least look into what the cars they have could be under hybrid design instead of just killing things.
