The Volt engine will not recharge its batteries--PSYCHE!

2011_chevrolet_volt_news_image1.jpg

You don't get a lot of "psyche" these days, do you? Ah well, c'est la vie.

Anyways, the Chevrolet Volt, the harrowing hero for General Motors, was originally reported to not have the ability via the gas combustible engine to have the lithium-ion battery be recharged. However, even after Chrysler themselves made this claim, now we get word from the company that in fact--it does!

So.......who's right and who's wrong, and why do I get the feeling that this type of "interpretational" stuff is a buyer beware red flag?

Evidently, the engine will in fact, under light "loads" (which basically means when you aren't accelerating), that the engine will be recharging the battery. Under optimal conditions, the battery will reach a certain point and then the engine will kick off, allowing the car to run on charged electricity. While this sounds great, keep in mind that the engine will really never be able to fully charge to the 40 mile capability it gets through regular charging, we're talking probably a few miles and then back to the regular ole' gas engine.

While this news isn't exactly flooring or terrible news, nor is it wonderful news, I still think the verdict on what the "real" car will do is still up for grabs. Ohhhh the drammaaaaaaa!!!!
