They keep falling like flies: Nissan drops out of Detroit

The Detroit Auto Show is certainly going to have a different feel this year. While the rest of the automotive world sits and chews its proverbial nails seeing what will happen with the big three and the potential bailout that the US government could give to aid Ford, Chrysler, and GM, the DAS has always been one of the marquee attractions to begin the new year.

But not so much this year.

Nissan announced today that it, along with several other car makers, will not be attending the Detroit Auto Show, citing not that they have anything against the DAS, but rather that in the global auto economy they want to focus their marketing dollars elsewhere. After GM and Chrysler basically went down to barebones for the LA show, it seems that their emphasis on being bigger and better for Detroit may be the only show in town once all is said and done.

Nissan is the second large Japanese auto maker to pull out of the show, with Mitsubishi being the first one to make the call recently. Mitsubishi, which showed off an electric vehicle in L.A., will use the New York show to launch a new product next April and will also be at the Chicago show in February.
