Toshiba throwing its hat in automotive li-ion ring

toshiba_scib.jpg

It's no secret that lithium-ion is the wave of the future for the automotive industry. As countries are frantically struggling to find alternative means of energy and while the gas prices have kind of shut down the frenzy for a while, it's only a matter of time before we are once again facing high prices at the pumps and wondering where the next fix is. Therefore, the march towards li-ion production continues to march on.

And now, Toshiba has officially thrown its hat into the automotive lithium ion production ring. Toshiba says its plans to have the capacity to produce 3 million lithium-ion battery cells a month by the year 2010. It’s difficult to translate that into vehicles per month, as hybrid and all-electric vehicles vary greatly in the number of battery cells required. The thing is that the electronics giant will really have to up its game, as it only produces 150K of the li-ion batteries now that aren't even the automotive variety.

Obviously, with Toshiba joining the ranks of Sanyo and Panasonic in pledging to produce that this means even more avenues for auto makers to continue making designs of existing and new cars, and that means probably very good things for consumers in terms of supply/demand.
