Toyota iQ brings home Car of the Year award in Japan

iq1.jpg

Amidst falling car sales in Japan for 3 straight months and almost a year in the US, Toyota got some good news when it was awarded the Car of the Year award by a committee of 65 auto-industry writers and consultants. With the BMW Mini One and the SmartforTwo basically being more expensive and with more quality, the iQ, which goes on sale in Japan domestically starting at the end of this month, didn't get much respect because of it being much cheaper than the other two and, assumingly, less quality.

However, this award gives verification that the iQ is nothing to blink at, even though if you do, you might miss it. Measuring just under 3 meters (10 feet), the iQ is slightly longer than the 2.4-meter Smart ForTwo and shorter than Japanese minicars such as Daihatsu Motor Co.'s Move.

Perhaps this can give some movement in terms of fledgling car sales in its homeland. While the US version will more than likely not be ready for sales until late fall 2009 for the 2010 models, this certainly gives the micro a great jump start.
