Toyota To Unveil Minicar Concept: Toyota iQ

toyota_iq.jpgThe assault on the Mini Cooper market continues with this latest concept debut from Toyota called the iQ. We posted previously about Volvo's entrance into the compact-hatchback market with the C30 and the 'getting small' trend continues to gain momentum with each passing auto show as automakers see the potential for decent profit margins on 'premium' styled compact cars.

Toyota deems the iQ a premium car ie, not cheap, due to the extra attention to fit and finish and aggressive exterior styling. Although it is interesting to note that the iQ, at least in terms of size, is really not that different than the bargain-centric Toyota Yaris. In many ways, the iQ is a direct sibling of the Yaris but clearly born with a silver spoon in its mouth, ie 17-inch wheels that scream attitude on a car this tiny.

Details on the iQ are still quite vague, although more details are expected to be known when the car is debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month. Rumors are running rampant that Yamaha may be supplying a motorcycle engine for the iQ, but again, this is nowhere near confirmed. Is this the beginning of the end for the Yaris? While a production date is still a ways off, insiders expect this concept to come fruition and be available for mass consumption by 2010'ish. This is definitely one concept to keep an eye on.
