Toyota trims global sales outlook

And the hits keep on comin’….

Toyota, amidst the sales downturn that so many other auto makers are having to endure, announced that it is trimming its global sales forecast for 2008, as pretty much everyone is in dire straits and facing massive overhauls of production away from larger vehicles towards, smaller, gas economy oriented cars. Oil prices continue to swell, and the continued drive away from gas guzzling SUVs and trucks have had the effect on all companies that will probably mean restatements across the board.

It’s not absolutely awful news, because the prognostication is that the sales should reach about 9.5 million units, which actually represents a 1% increase over last year’s sales figures. The bad news of that is that it will be the lowest increase Toyota has seen since 2001. Still, the car maker remains in hot pursuit to overtake General Motors as the world’s car sales leader.

Hey, at least it is still forecasting a gain. It could be worse *Cough Ford Cough*.
