Toyota Tundra Production halted; Prius to be made in the States

toyota-tundra.jpg

In the wake of the ever-declining interest in the big gas-guzzling SUVs and Trucks, Toyota has announced that as of the beginning of August that the Tundra and Sequoia will be halted in terms of production on a "temporary" basis. Production of the Tundra full-size pick-up truck, currently built in Indiana and Texas, will be consolidated at the San Antonio plant in Spring 2009. If you can define temporary as forever, that would probably be a more apt way to think of it, in my opinion. Don't worry--Toyota has enough work for the auto workers at the plants that these are produced at, and they will not be losing jobs.

The Prius will also start to be produced in Massachusetts, citing the ever-growing demand for the hybrid. This will be the second Toyota hybrid able to be built stateside (along with the Camry). Highlander SUVs will also start to be made in Indiana starting in late 2009.

These moves were not surprises overall, and I also wouldn't be surprised if the trend to again shift production of the more small cars and hybrid models to more plants throughout the states.
